Jay Z, Beyoncé On the Run With Chase: How The Bank Scored The Summer’s Hottest Tour Sponsorship….ThisismotionTV

Inside the bidding war to sponsor the hottest tour of the summer.
This article first appeard in the May 17th issue of Billboard Magazine.

Jay Z and Beyoncé’s On the Run tour is already one of the summer concert season’s hottest engagements. Tickets sold out in minutes. Overnight, the average price on the secondary market soared to $342.67 — an 82.3% increase from Jay Z’s last summer stadium outing with Justin Timberlake, according to ticket aggregator TiqIQ. But fans aren’t the only ones scrambling for a piece of the action. The lucrative tour sparked competition among top brands in financial services, which jockeyed with other bidders for sponsorship rights.

JP Morgan Chase emerged victorious — touting its size, partnerships and pocketbook — with an 11th-hour negotiation, according to four sources familiar with the deal. And though it’s a rare tour sponsorship for the bank, the deal establishes Chase as a formidable player in what had previously been a two-way rivalry between Citi and American Express for such deals.

With 50 million customers in the United States, Chase is one of the country’s largest bank and credit card companies. (AmEx, for its part, has 53.5 million U.S. card holders as of March 31, while Citi has a reported 55 million members stateside.) Chase has had few music or concert sponsorships in the past, beyond a 10-year, $300 million pact with Madison Square Garden and a 2013 deal with Clear Channel’s Jingle Ball tour. “We are picky with respect to the events we align our brand against,” says Steve Pamon, head of sports and entertainment marketing at Chase.

But the bank has a deep relationship with CAA Sports, a minority investor in Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports, which helped drive the decision to bid roughly $4 million in cash, according to sources. That was enough to secure the come-from-behind win.

Pamon disputes the rumored price tag. “The economics of this tour are greatly exaggerated. It’s not just rights fees, but the activation,” he says, referring to the VIP areas and other exclusive card member experiences on-site at the shows.

Citi, for its part, does a lot more tour sponsorships — multimillion-dollar deals for the likes of Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones and Katy Perry in the last 12 months alone. Citi had a 22% increase in overall ticket sales in 2013 through its partnership with Live Nation, which included more than 60 of the year’s top 100 tours.

“With marquee tours there is always competition,” says a Citi representative. “We have enjoyed working with Jay Z and Beyonce on multiple tours and have great respect for them.” AmEx, which sells fewer tickets than Citi, still had a record year in 2013, with over 1.8 million tickets sold to card members, including seven of last year’s top 20 tours. An AmEx representative declined comment, as did a Roc Nation spokesperson.

And I finally believed her at some point.” The Oscar winner, who’s now a face of Lancôme Paris, is excited for this honor in part because of “all the girls who would see me … and feel a little more seen.”

Phil Jackson leaning toward Knicks….ThisismotionTV

 photo phil-jackson-spike-lee_zpsbe86b1cd.jpg

While a decision has not been made, Phil Jackson is leaning toward taking a front-office job with the New York Knicks, a source close to the team tells ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

Jackson’s role would be president of basketball operations, in complete control of all basketball-related matters, according to the source.

It is unclear whether the decision would include an agreement to coach the Knicks next season, the source said. A decision is expected sometime next week.

Knicks president Steve Mills had offered the head-coaching position to Jackson but he declined. The 68-year-old Hall of Fame coach has said that he would like to move into a front office and run a team.

FAST COMPANY – NIKE’S MARK PARKER: THE WORLD’S MOST CREATIVE CEO……THISISMOTIONTV

 photo fast-company-nike-ceo-mark-parker-001_zps16763d73.jpg

ThisismotionTV

When we saw the latest issue of Fast Company magazine, hitting newsstands this week, first thought came across our minds were questions about its editors’ state of minds. Have they gone to the preverbal deep end? Or drank a batch of Kool-Aid laced by the PR machinery? Many corporate executives have been bestowed with the honorary title “most innovative” before. But to named one “The World’s Most Creative CEO” seemed like an infringement on journalistic integrity.
Upon reading the article, we have to admit we were wrong. The profile on Nike CEO Mark Parker is one of balanced journalistic approach, if not in-depth. While the Nike lifer shunned publicity and attention usually, Parker allowed writer Ellen McGirt a rare inside look of his world, from a simple “tinker” of his own running sneakers while as a star long distance runner before joining Nike, to a foremost footwear designer on the most remarkable creations: Air Pegasus, Trainer 1, and the Visible Air technology. Now as the head honcho of the world’s largest athletic lifestyle company, with $19 billion in revenue for 2010, Parker is still very much of a tinker who’s never far from his sketchbook and lives on the tenet first introduced by his grandmother “Be a sponge. Curiosity is life. Assumption is death. Look around.” We can just imagine what he is doing now in 2013.

Idris Elba (@idriselba) In GQ magazine…..ThisismotionTV

Idris Elba is the third and final cover man that will be featured in GQ’s October issue. Idris is promoting Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, a film which man think will earn Idris his first Best Actor Oscar nomination

 photo idris1_zps6f5b695c.jpg

Idris Elba on formerly selling drugs & working as a doorman to make ends meet:
“Yeah, it was, because I was running with cats. I mean, I was DJ’ing, but I was also pushing bags of weed; I was doing my work. I had to. I know that sounds corny, but this is the truth.” He says he’d sell drugs at Carolines, and meanwhile all these successful guys would come through: D. L. Hughley, Dave Chappelle. “All those black comedians, they knew me as a doorman.”

…on his legacy of playing Stringer Bell on HBO’s The Wire:
“That really is more about the writing of The Wire than it is the performance. You know, Stringer Bell is a great character that was written. I happened to play him, but it could’ve been anybody playing that role.”

You really feel like anybody could’ve played Stringer?
“Listen, I think I brought Stringer to life my way, but The Wire isn’t a classic because of Stringer Bell. The Sopranos was a classic because of Tony Soprano.”

…on his feud with Liam Gallagher following the NME Awards:
And then he throws on “Wonderwall,” by Oasis, which is curious, because even though the mostly British crowd is howling the song back at him, Elba has been in the tabloids recently for an altercation with Liam Gallagher after this year’s NME Awards; the younger Gallagher brother removed Elba’s wool cap in an apparently disrespectful manner. Elba took issue; the two men got into it. So it seems suspicious, Elba playing Gallagher’s song, and the next day, when we meet up again, I ask him about it. “Wonderwall” last night—were you taking a shot? “No! F–k that idiot. No.”

 photo idris2_zps3f89deaa.jpg

Basically, Elba says, he just gave Liam a hug and an affectionate rub on the head.
“Didn’t like that. Don’t touch his hair, apparently. F–k off. Next time walk with a f–king hairdresser, then.” Laughter. “Well, ‘I’m a popular rock singer, so I’m going to be mean and f–king horrible to people just because they messed up my look.’ F–k off. I played his song because his song’s a classic. I couldn’t—I don’t even know what his songs are about now or what band he’s in now. No one gives a f–k, yeah? He was popular when he was in Oasis.”

Paternity drama:
He was dating a woman in Florida, had been for a couple of years. They were living together and in love. She became pregnant and gave birth to a boy. For a brief moment, it was among the happiest times of Elba’s life. “The celebration of having a son—from a man’s perspective, it’s massive.” He told friends about it. He told reporters about it. Then came the suggestion—not from the child’s mother, but from elsewhere—that not everything was what it appeared to be.

“It wasn’t immediately obvious—well, it was, because he didn’t look like me,” Elba says. “But it wasn’t immediately obvious what had gone down.” Eventually, Elba decided to take a paternity test, which showed the child wasn’t his. “To be given that and then have it taken away so harshly,” he says, “was like taking a full-on punch in the face: POW.”

…on finding out he was not the father of a boy he was calling his own:
“You know, the truth is—like, even admitting it, I’ll probably get laughed at for the rest of my life. But it is just tragic, and it happened.” He looks directly at me when he says this. “But I wasn’t knocked out. I stood right the f–k back up, and I ain’t aiming to take another punch in the face ever again.

Do you understand what I’m saying? It happened to me. I moved on.” In a paradoxical way, he says, it was freeing. “I’ve not been an angel in my life, either—do you know what I’m saying? So to a certain extent, what goes around comes around. But for me in the future, I’m about being comfortable. That’s it.”

He disappears: As a kid, Elba says, “I sort of blended into the background quite a bit. I wasn’t the guy that was a big personality. I was the tall, silent, quiet type.” Even now—I can attest to this—he gets lost in crowds. Walk into a room with him and watch him disappear. “I call it the invisible factor,” he says. “On any ordinary street, walking down in London Soho in a cap, I’m just a f–king tall black man walking along.”

Cyrus Gets Nude For Rolling Stone…..ThisismotionTV

Her VMAs Performance Could Have Been WAY Raunchier.

Miley thought there was a chance the network might pull the plug on her mid-performance, but she didn’t expect so much shock and vitriol. “Honestly, that was our MTV version,” she says. “We could have even gone further, but we didn’t. I thought that’s what the VMAs were all about! It’s not the Grammys or the Oscars. You’re not supposed to show up in a gown, Vanna White-style” – a little dig at Taylor Swift. “It’s supposed to be fun!”

Miley Cyrus Is Very Self-Aware. OK, Guys?

“I wasn’t trying to be sexy. If I was trying to be sexy, I could have been sexy. I can dance a lot better than I was dancing.” She knows sticking her tongue out isn’t hot and that those weird stubby pigtails aren’t flattering (“I look like a little creature”). And she even knows it’s ridiculous for her to twerk. “People are like, ‘Miley thinks she’s a black girl, but she’s got the flattest ass ever,’” she says. “I’m like, I’m 108 pounds! I know! Now people expect me to come out and twerk with my tongue out all the time. I’ll probably never do that sh*t again.”

Apple Passes Coca-Cola as World’s Most Valuable Brand….ThisismotionTV

 photo apple-passes-coca-cola-as-most-valuable-brand-1_zps3a2327db.jpg

After 13 years at the top, Coca-Cola has been dethroned by Apple as the world’s most valuable brand according to a report by Interbrand, a branding and corporate identity consulting company. Placement on the company’s Best Global Brands annual report, which it’s been producing since 2000, is decided based on a variety of criteria including financial performance and public impact. According to this year’s report, Apple’s value is currently estimated at $98.3 billion, a 28% increase from 2012.

The upset for the soft drink giant as well as the current top 10 are just some of the signs of the dominance of technology brands in the marketing community. Many of Apple’s rivals are in the top ten including Google (now in 2nd place up from 4th), Samsung (from 9th to 8th), Microsoft (still 5th), I.B.M. (3rd to 4th) and Intel (8th to 9th).

Although Apple might have won the value game, a bright spot for Coca-Cola is its Facebook popularity, with 73.2 million likes on its Fan Page as opposed to Apple’s 9.8 million.

2014 Refreshed Sprinter Van…..ThisismotionTV

 photo 8c61db149ae411e2ab3b22000a9f14cb_7_zps73f92506.jpg

By Aaron Bragman

More often than not, the only three-pointed star on a vehicle at any construction site is the real estate developer’s S-Class sitting by the curb, not a contractor’s truck romping through the dirt. But that slowly may be changing as Mercedes-Benz makes inroads in the commercial vehicle market with its latest and greatest Sprinter van. The versatile and increasingly popular Sprinter (which we recently highlighted in our video from the 2013 Work Truck Show) is a European-style van — meaning it’s tall, upright and exclusively diesel powered, a marked contrast from the traditional American-style full-size vans offered by Ford, GM and now Nissan that rely primarily on gasoline engines.

Slow and steady growth for the South Carolina-assembled Sprinter has followed a push to create more than 200 dedicated Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealers nationwide — separate showrooms sharing space with the brand’s luxury cars. Sixty percent of Sprinters are going to the construction trades market, according to Mercedes-Benz.

With the U.S. market poised to see new European-style vans arriving from Ford (Transit) and Ram (ProMaster), Mercedes-Benz believes the time is right to forge ahead with plans to heavily promote the Sprinter. “We were the oddball for more than 10 years,” says Claus Tritt, Mercedes-Benz’ general manager for commercial vans. “Now with Ford and Ram introducing European-style products, we are the benchmark.”

Mercedes-Benz recently held a media briefing at its emissions testing center in Ann Arbor, Mich., introducing the updated 2014 Sprinter and showing off a handful of the 80-plus outfitters that take part in the official Mercedes-Benz equipment program. Also on hand was a restored 1960 L319 Sprinter — a beautiful, classic model with around 40 horsepower and all the safety features of a shopping cart — to give some historical perspective on how far the Sprinter has come.

The new Sprinter gets only mild styling updates for 2014, losing the high eyebrows and smiley-face look of the old model in favor of a more menacing, horizontal-themed appearance. LED running lights adorn the new headlights, which bear more than a passing resemblance to the units seen on the company’s luxury cars. The rest of the van’s styling, inside and out, is pretty much unchanged. Five versions will be available from Mercedes-Benz: a 12-passenger van, a basic cargo van, an 18-passenger minibus, a cab-chassis model and a four-passenger “crew” van — essentially a cargo van with an easily removable second row of seats. “This is our crew-cab pickup,” says Antje Williams, Sprinter marketing manager.

Styling isn’t all that different, but the big news is under hood where Mercedes-Benz is supplementing the 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel that carries over from the 2013 model with a new 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel as the standard engine. The smaller engine is rated at 161 hp and 265 pounds-feet of torque, considerably less than the 188 hp and 325 pounds-feet that the V-6 makes but still enough to easily motivate the truck, according to Mercedes-Benz, which says that the engine is popular overseas. The four-cylinder makes the most of that torque with the adoption of a new seven-speed automatic transmission; the V-6 continues to make do with a five-speed automatic. Mercedes-Benz claims that the new four-cylinder turbo-diesel results in an 18 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the already-efficient diesel V-6. Exact EPA numbers are not yet available.
